A gay ABC news anchor has come out on US television after being inspired by Star Trek star Zachary Quinto, who also recently opened up about his homosexuality.
In what he described as “kind of a big moment”, Dan Kloeffler referred to his homosexuality on air for the first time today.
The journalist joked on air that he would have to reconsider his policy of not dating actors, following his report for World News Now on Quinto revealing his sexuality.
Quinto, who also starred in the drama Heroes, acknowledged he was gay in an interview with New York magazine, following the suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer; a gay teenager from New York who produced the “It Gets Better” video campaign aimed at helping bullied gay teens.
“I’ve never shared that I’m gay on-air, even though I’ve been out to my family, friends and co-workers for years,” Kloeffler later wrote on an

Like Quinto, Kloeffler said Rodemeyer’s death encouraged him to go public with his sexuality.
“But for the same reason that Zach decided to come out, I too, no longer wanted to hide this part of my life,” he said.
“As a journalist, I don’t want to be the story, but as a gay man I don’t want to stand silent if I can offer some inspiration or encouragement to kids that might be struggling with who they are.
“There have been too many tragic endings and too many cases of bullying because of intolerance.”
